Saint Monica university institute chancellor leads effort to end pro-independence war

Presents Peace Plan Paper at United Nations Minorities Forum in Geneva

Buea, Cameroon & Geneva, Switzerland: Saint Monica University Institute (SMUI), a leading private higher education institution in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon, today announced that its founder and chancellor, Professor Januarius Asongu, will be presenting a bold proposal to bring about peace in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon at the United Nations Forum on Minority Rights in Geneva, Switzerland this week. The proposal contained in the Peace Plan Paper (PPP) employs a win-win approach that should lead to a cessation of hostilities by both sides of the conflict while guaranteeing autonomy for the Anglophone regions.

The PPP is the product of months of deliberations by Former British Southern Cameroons nationalist groups under the mentorship of the British-based International Communities Organization (ICO), an international organization that seeks to represent the interest of minority communities in conflict situations. The ICO seeks to help negotiate an agreement between the Former British Southern Cameroons nationalist groups and the government of the Republic of Cameroon.

“I am humbled to be offered an opportunity to speak on behalf of the people of the Former British Southern Cameroons at a United Nations forum,” said Prof. Januarius Asongu, Chancellor of SMUI. “This is a singular opportunity for our people to have their voice heard, and it is the voice of peace. It is our hope that the government of Cameroon will take our peace initiative seriously as it is already being supported by several UN member states.”

While details of the PPP are yet to be made public, Saint Monica University Institute is the first academic institution in the country to endorse the initiative. Furthermore, the School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP) at SMUI offers programs in Conflict Negotiation as well as Peace and Human Rights, which can help those interested in resolving the war that has ravished the Anglophone regions for more than seven years.
